Cognitech, Inc., the forensic video and image processing company whose technology has been accepted in U.S. courts of law since 1992, today announced the launch of Cognitech Intelligence, an artificial intelligence module that automates face detection, redaction, enhancement, and video upscaling for forensic investigators.

Forensic video analysts have traditionally relied on manual, click-point-by-click methods to locate and process faces in surveillance and investigative footage — a process that can take hours on a single case. Cognitech Intelligence removes that manual step. Powered by deep learning, the module automatically detects human faces across video and image evidence without requiring an analyst to mark reference points, then applies redaction, enhancement, or highlighting depending on the investigation’s needs.

The release includes four core capabilities: automatic face detection for identifying individuals of interest; one-click redaction for protecting the identity of bystanders and uninvolved parties in footage intended for public release; face enhancement for sharpening facial detail in low-quality frames; and advanced video upscaling that recovers detail from low-resolution footage using Cognitech’s proprietary reconstruction algorithms. A combined mode, Upscaling with Face Enhancement, applies both frame-wide resolution improvement and targeted facial clarity in a single pass.

Cognitech Intelligence integrates with Cognitech Video Investigator, the company’s core forensic video processing environment, which holds 23 U.S. patents and is used by law enforcement, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and international agencies including Japan’s National Police Agency and the German Air Force.
